‘Big Brother’ Ratings Top Night Of Holiday Declines, ‘Hannibal’ & ‘Rookie Blue’ Even

With most of America getting ready for the long Fourth of July weekend, primetime television took a bit of a backseat last night. Almost everyone was down and so was overall usage among adults 18-49, which took an 8% decline from last week. Let’s actually give shout-outs where shout-outs are due: the still cancelled Hannibal (0.4/1), the second week of the sixth season of Rookie Blue (0.6/2), and Beauty And The Beast (0.2/1) all bucked the trend to stay even with their June 25 results – which were all series lows. Otherwise, ratings gravity had everyone in its pull last night with CBS’ Under The Dome (1.0/4) falling the most. The second week of the third season of the drama based on a Stephen King novel fell 23% in the key demo from its two-hour launch the week before.

It probably didn’t help Under The Dome that its lead-in Big Brother (1.8/7) also had a double-digit drop. With a highly promoted live takeover of the show by alumni and Kathy Griffin plus the first eviction of Season 17, they certainly weren’t in holiday chill out mode on BB. However, while easily the highest-rated show of the night and the second most watched with 5.77 million viewers (behind only the 6.85 million who tuned in for a The Big Bang Theory (1.3/6) encore at 8 PM), last night’s 9 PM Big Brother fell 14% from its 8 PM June 25 debut this season. Overall, with BB and UTD, plus that BBT repeat and a Mom (1.0/4) encore at 8:30 PM, CBS won the slow night in 18-49s (1.3/5) and viewership (5.67 million).

With a 0.8/4 rating, Fox was in second place in the demo with Boom! (0.7/3) and Wayward Pines (1.0/4) both down two-tenths from last week. In third place among adults 18-49 on Thursday, ABC saw The Astronaut Wives Club (0.7/3) and Mistresses (0.6/3) stumble 12% and 14%, respectively, in the demo. That’s a new series low, at least in early numbers, for the 9 PM sultry soap.

The Season 2 debut of Food Fighters (0.7/3) certainly didn’t prove very tasty for NBC, even with the Adam Richman-hosted cooking competition now moved from Tuesdays to Thursdays. Compared to the July 22 premiere of the series last year, last night’s Food Fighters sank a hard 30% among adults 18-49. With that weak lead-in on an already slumping night, not much of a surprise that Aquarius (0.4/2) took a tumble. In this case the recently renewed David Duchovny-starring 1960s-set drama took a 33% fall from last week’s low. Not so groovy, man.
