Benicio Del Toro Praises Star Wars 8 Director

‘Star Wars 8’ star Benicio del Toro praises director Rian Johnson… and explains exactly why he thinks he’s the right man for the job.

During an interview with Empire Magazine, the 48-year-old ‘Star Wars 8’ star explained why he thinks Rian Johnson is perfect for the upcoming sequel.

“[He’s going to] bring a cool, sci-fi realism, if I may say that,” he explained. “I love his film Looper, and his other work… I just like talking to him about the film. He’s one of those new talented people that Star Wars is hiring to infuse the franchise with new steroids.”

Of course, Rian Johnson is best known for ‘Looper’ – the hit sci-fi movie starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis. With both actors playing the younger and older versions of the same character, it was a time-travelling mind-bender with a good bit of action thrown in.

And it shows exactly what Rian Johnson is capable of.

Whether or not he gets to experiment with the style and tone of ‘Star Wars’ is another matter entirely… and I can’t help thinking that we’re more likely to see a movie which falls in line with J.J. Abrams’ vision for ‘Star Wars 7’.

But thankfully, the old-style charm is what Del Toro loves about ‘Star Wars’ in the first place.

“I grew up with lobby cards of Star Wars glued to my wall,” he said. “Back when they had lobby cards… I still have the whole collection. I mean, not the whole collection – I might have lost a few. But I liked Han Solo, Chewbacca, I liked them all.”

“Star Wars, Empire Strikes /Back and Return of the Jedi… those three were movies I saw as a youngster and you know, kinda marked me. Especially the first one.”

I think it’s fair to say that like most other ‘Star Wars’ fans, Benicio del Toro has a fondness for the original trilogy. And given what we’ve seen of the sequel trilogy so far, that’s going to come in handy.

‘Star Wars 8’ heads to cinemas on 26 May 2017.
