Avengers: Age Of Ultron Deleted Scene Adds Twist To Major Character Death

A deleted scene which didn’t make Joss Whedon’s final cut of ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ has been revealed that seems to give a new dimension to one of the film’s most shocking moments.

The previously unseen clip starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Quicksilver and Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch features on the DVD and Blu-ray release of Marvel’s superhero sequel, and had it been included in the theatrical release it could have made a vital climactic moment seem quite different.

It goes without saying that there are some major plot spoilers coming up…

As you’ll remember Pietro Maximoff, AKA Quicksilver, sacrifices himself at the end of ‘Age Of Ultron’ while attempting to save the residents of Sokovia from Ultron.

Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye is running across the ruined streets of the fictional Eastern European city carrying a young boy when - out of nowhere - one of Ultron’s drones rakes the street with bullets. Hawkeye gallantly shields the lad against the incoming gunfire, but Quicksilver dashes in front of them both, soaking up the bullets, sacrificing himself in the process.

“You didn’t see that coming?” he quips, echoing his previous banter with the arrow-slinger, before he succumbs to his injuries.

It’s a shocking moment that puts a blood-soaked full stop at the end of Pietro’s short-lived career as an Avenger, but a vital one that shows the redemption of the smart-mouthed, fleet-footed villain-turned-hero, but what if saving Hawkeye wasn’t his primary motivation?

The new deleted scene suggests Quicksilver may have been trying to save the boy, rather than his co-Avenger. The clip sees Pietro and his twin sister Wanda delivering aid to the residents of Sokovia, and Quicksilver is attempting to court a female resident named Zrinka played by Brit Dominique Provost-Chalkley, who crops up occasionally throughout the theatrical cut of the film.

He gives her a ball “for her brother”, the lad he saves at the end of the film, and a pretty designer dress. “Is every girl in Sokovia getting a dress from Paris?” asks Scarlet Witch.

He’s clearly trying to woo Zrinka and his relationship with Hawkeye had been tetchy at best, so is that a better explanation for Quicksilver’s actions at the end of the film?

The scene was cut for a reason, so his sacrifice for the Avengers was probably the motivation Joss Whedon intended to imply, but this deleted scene suggests there was more to Quicksilver than we got to see.

The director already gave a bit of an explanation for Quicksilver’s behaviour talking to Empire around the movie’s release.

“In this movie, we’re saying, 'Prove to me that you guys are heroes.’ And [Quicksilver’s] the guy that does it. The most arrogant, the most annoying one. If you want the DVD extras, [you’ll see that] he’s the biggest p***y hound. Hawkeye genuinely hates this guy, and that’s the guy who saves him. I knew it would be resonant, and make everything else work better and matter more.”

The finished version of ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ clocked in at a hefty 142 minutes. Whedon says the first cut ran to 195 minutes and that heated discussions with studio execs lead to drastic changes to the finished product, including cutting Tom Hiddleston’s role as Loki completely.

“The dreams, the farmhouse, these were things I fought [for].” Whedon explained on the Empire Podcast. “With the cave, they pointed a gun at the farm’s head and 'Give us the cave’. They got the farm. In a civilised way – I respect these guys, but that’s when it got really unpleasant.”
