‘Astronauts Wives Club’ Ratings Rocket Up, ‘Big Brother’ Steady, ‘Food Fighters’ Down

The thing about clichés is that they are so often true and that what goes down also goes up, to flip one such expression – at least when it comes to space race ratings this week. After falling 33% among adults 18-49 last week from its July 16 show, ABC’s The Astronaut Wives Club (0.8/3) rocketed up the exact same percentage this week. Now that is coming off a low last week and still in a struggling zone for any show, summer or otherwise. Still, the freshman 60s-set series saw the biggest gain of anyone on the Big 4 last night to match its third highest result among the key demo. Not that such a result won AWC its time slot – that went to strong ratings for repeats of CBS’ The Big Bang Theory (1.5/7) and Mom (1.1/5) – with the former the second highest rated show of the night and the most watched with 7.16 million tuning in.

However, the ABC NASA series did take second place in the 8 – 9 PM slot, beating NBC’s Food Fighters (0.7/6), Fox’s Boom! (0.6/3) and The CW’s Beauty and the Beast (0.2/1). The NBC unscripted show had a 13% demo bite taken out of it from last week while the Fox show was even with its July 23 airing as was Beast.

With a 5% rise over last week, Big Brother (2.0/8) was once again the highest rated show of Thursday. Add the muscular encores and Under The Dome (1.0/4) even with its July 23 and you have CBS winning both the demo and viewership last night with a 1.4/6 rating and 5.74 million watching.

Now that Wayward Pines ended its 10-episode run last week and Hannibal and Aquarius now long shuttled off to Saturdays, there was a lot less new drama on Thursday last night. ABC’s two other offerings of Mistresses (0.7/3) and Rookie Blue (0.7/3) had the former even and the latter down 13% from last week.

NBC’s 9 – 11 Dateline Thursday Night Mystery (1.0/4) matched its last two weeks in the demo since its debut in the slot. The news mag’s 5.5 million viewers last night were the best the show was done since taking over for Hannibal and Aquarius. The CW’s double dose of Dates saw the 9 PM (0.1/1) showing even with last week’s low and the 9:30 PM (0.2/1) airing up 100% from its July 23 show.
