"Assassin's Creed," a big screen adaptation of the hit video game, will be backed by Ubisoft and New Regency.

A screenplay for the film is being developed immediately, the partners said Monday. Michael Fassbender, who memorably played a cyborg in "Prometheus" and a sex addict in "Shame," is attached to star as the killer for hire.

"Assassin's Creed" has been a major success for gamemaker Ubisoft. Its storyline about a bartender who descends from a long line of assassins and becomes embroiled in a conspiracy involving the Knights Templar has spawned several sequels. The latest installment in the franchise, "Assassin's Creed III: Liberation," hits stores on Oct. 30.

Ubisoft said it tapped New Regency because the production company has a long history of producing major movies like "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" and "Daredevil."

"Ubisoft chose to partner with New Regency because they are a talent- and filmmaker-driven company, with the same independent and creative mindset that we have at Ubisoft Motion Pictures," Jean-Julien Baronnet, chief executive officer, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, said in a statement.

Financial terms of the deal with New Regency were not disclosed.
