AMC Orders ‘The West’ Docudrama From Robert Redford, Renews ‘Making Of The Mob’
AMC has given a straight-to-series order to docudrama The West, from Robert Redford and Making Of The Mob‘s Stephen David. The network will make the announcement at its TCA presentation today. Additionally, the network has renewed The Making Of The Mob for a second season.
In the vein of Making Of The Mob, The West will chronicle the evolution of the American West from 1865-1890. Using a blend of dramatic scenes, documentary footage and visual effects, The West will recreate the violent world of cowboys, Indians, outlaws and lawmen, and chronicle the intimate, little-known stories of Western legends such as Jesse James, Billy the Kid, Wyatt Earp, Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull. The limited event series will show how, in the aftermath of the Civil War, the opportunity of land transforms the United States into the “land of opportunity” and creates modern America. The West will also feature exclusive interviews with notable names from classic Western films, including James Caan, Tom Selleck, Kiefer Sutherland, Ed Harris and more.
The eight-hour series will go into production in August for debut in summer 2016, along with the final episodes of AMC’s Western drama Hell On Wheels. Stephen David of Stephen David Entertainment is executive producing with Robert Redford and Sundance Productions president Laura Michalchyshyn.
The project had been originally set up at Discovery, and moved to AMC a year ago.
In the just ordered eight-episode second season of The Making Of The Mob, from Stephen David Entertainment, the docuseries will explore organized crime in Chicago, including the rise and fall of Al Capone. (Season one explored mob history in New York.) Mob has averaged 1.5 million total viewers through six episodes in Live+3. The season finale airs August 3.
