Amazon Taps Albert Cheng And Bob Berney To Help Lead Movie Productions

Amazon Studios announced the two hires this morning. Former Disney ABC Television Group digital guru Albert Cheng is the new COO, and indie film marketer Bob Berney is Head of Movies Distribution and Marketing.

Cheng just left Disney after a decade of helping it to build its online and on-demand platforms. He had been hired by recently departed Disney/ABC Media exec Anne Sweeney and said in April that he felt it was time to move on. In his new gig, he will oversee all of Amazon Studios’ business operations and software development.

Berney comes to Amazon from indie marketing and distribution company Picturehouse, where he was CEO — relaunching an operation that he ran at Warner Bros before the studio shuttered it. Amazon says that he “brings a creative, individualized approach to marketing and distribution for films like Pan’s Labyrinth, The Passion Of The Christ and My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” He’ll oversee distribution and marketing for Amazon Original Movies, the arm of Amazon Studios that will produce and acquire original movies for theatrical release and “early window distribution for Prime members,” the company says.
