Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, Vudu Among 11 Entertainment Apps to Launch with PlayStation 4

Sony said Thursday that its PlayStation 4 will launch with 11 entertainment and sports apps when the new videogame console becomes available Nov. 15.

Those will include Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, Crackle, Crunchyroll, Epix, NBA Game Time, NHL Gamecenter, Redbox Instant, Vudu and YuppTV, with more set to be added later.

Many of the streaming apps were expected, given that they’re currently available on the PlayStation 3. Sony likes to tout that more people stream entertainment through Netflix on the PS3 than the rival Xbox 360 from Microsoft.

The addition of the apps are key for Sony as it looks to position the PlayStation 4 as more than just a gaming device and more of a hub for all forms of entertainment — something Microsoft is also pushing with the Xbox One, to the point where the name is even meant to reflect that.
