Alex Gibney (We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks) will direct a four-hour documentary miniseries on Frank Sinatra for HBO -- what its producers call an “up close and personal examination” of the legendary singer and actor, Sharon Hall, president of Alcon Television, said Tuesday.

The documentary will cover his life, music and career, drawing on industry footage and home movies, some of which has never been seen before, as well as private and public performances.

“Alex’s vision for this unique documentary is an exciting one,” says Hall, “taking viewers into the singular and extraordinary world created by one of the greatest entertainers the world has ever known.”

Producers include daughter Nancy Sinatra and Frank Sinatra Enterprises, a joint venture of the Sinatra family and Warner Music Group.

The production team also includes the Alcon Television Group, Kennedy-Marshall Company and Jigsaw Productions. Jeff Pollack will also serve as a producer. Executive producers, besides Nancy Sinatra, are Frank Marshall, Charles Pignone, Hall and Alcon co-ceo’s Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove.

“Although our primary business at Alcon Television is to develop, finance and produce scripted series for broadcast and cable television,” added Hall, “we were overwhelmed by the scope and depth of this incredible story, not to mention the opportunity to work Alex and to partner with Kennedy-Marshall and Frank Sinatra Enterprises, on what is surely to be the definitive portrait of our era’s greatest performer.”

Gibney won an Academy Award for his documentary Taxi to the Dark Side. His most recent documentary is Focus Features' Wikileaks movie.
