Ryan Reynolds: 'Deadpool' is perfect for Valentine’s Day

It’s that time of the year again, when the roses come out and couples start fretting about how to mark the occasion. Yes, it’s Valentine’s Day, and what better way to spend it than to watch a romantic love story?

And Ryan Reynolds wants “Deadpool” to be the movie for you and your Valentine’s.

“He’s (Deadpool) gonna go kill the guy who hurt his girl… That’s for Valentine’s Day. That screams Valentine’s Day,” said the star, who was speaking to Yahoo Singapore on a press tour in Taiwan.

While Reynolds was aware of how some corners of the internet were trying to convince their partners to watch “Deadpool” on the premise that it was a romance movie, he didn’t see anything wrong with the label.

“You can’t technically say it’s not romantic,” Reynolds said about his latest not-so-superhero outing. “This is about a guy, going after his girl, in sweet d**k-kicking revenge, what’s more romantic than that?”

The Canadian actor, who previously appeared as another version of Wade Wilson/Deadpool in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”, also argued against the idea that women only wanted to watch romance movies.

“I think it’s dangerous to say girls are only looking for romance movies, because I know a ton of women that love action movies, love funny movies, love love stories, love all of the above,“ he said.

Deadpool’s female cast

Reynolds said he felt “pretty good” about the female characters in “Deadpool”, with Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Gina Carano (Angel Dust) and Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead) all having prominent roles to play in the film, but admitted there’s “always room for more”.

“Some of the things we’re talking about if we get an opportunity to do another one… we have a couple of characters from the X-Men we really want to bring in. They’re amazing,” he said.

One of the best parts about playing the Merc with a Mouth, Reynolds said, was that there were “no rules” involved.

“We have an opportunity to do anything and everything we want. And that extends not to just the film but the marketing,” he said. “The marketing for the film has been really fun to do.”

Given some of Reynold’s and "Wolverine” co-star Hugh Jackman’s previous Twitter posts, it’s hard to doubt him on that.

“Deadpool” is out in cinemas now.
