Ryan Gosling’s Neil Armstrong Biopic ‘First Man’ Lands Awards-Friendly 2018 Release Date

Universal Pictures announced Tuesday that it will release “First Man,” Damien Chazelle’s biopic about Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong, on October 12, 2018.

The film will see the “La La Land” director reunite with Ryan Gosling to tell the story of how Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the moon and the dangers faced by the Apollo 11 team during their historic mission.

Based on the book of the same name by James R. Hansen, the film is written by Josh Singer, who won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay last year for his work on “Spotlight.” Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen will produce the film through Temple Hill Entertainment alongside Chazelle and Gosling, with Isaac Klausner as executive producer.

Universal’s announcement comes after a very successful awards season for Chazelle and Gosling, as “La La Land” became the first movie to win seven Golden Globes. Chazelle became the youngest filmmaker to win the Academy Award for Best Director, while Gosling received his second Oscar nomination for Best Actor and his first Golden Globe win after five nominations.
