Ryan Coogler Talks 'Black Panther' and Possible 'Hamilton' Film Adaptation

Of all the young filmmakers to come on the scene in recent years, Ryan Coogler may be the one who is generating the most excitement. Fruitvale Station showed Coogler’s ability to make a profound, small movie, and Creed showed his ability to invigorate a sinking movie franchise with box office success.

In a recent interview with Fast Company, Coogler talked about the much-anticipated project he’s working on now: Black Panther for Marvel. Under the supervision of Kevin Feige, Marvel movies have tended to not allow directors too much delineation from their overall vision. That’s why Captain America feels a lot like Ant-Man, which feels a lot like Thor.

Coogler knows this but is still seeking to make Black Panther his own. “I think that’s a great creative challenge to me — to make this movie as personal as possible,” he told the magazine. “It’s going to be my most personal movie to date, which is crazy to say, but it’s completely the case.”

Beyond Black Panther, Fast Company inquired about Coogler’s interest in adapting the hit broadway musical Hamilton into a film. He said, “Talking with [Lin-Manuel Miranda], whenever he decides to make it, it’s going to be so far down the road. It needs to live onstage, travel the country, and travel the world before they make it a movie.”

In the span of just a few years, Coogler has gone from indie filmmaker to director of high-profile blockbusters. But the pressure doesn’t seem to be getting to him. “Things that appear to be challenges, I actually look at them as blessings,” he noted. “I’m not too far removed from making an independent film and not knowing if it’s gonna see the light of day.”
