Anthony Perkins brought to life an all-time great horror-movie character as Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. Now, his son, actor/filmmaker Oz Perkins, is carving out his own impressive horror-movie resume, as director of both The Blackcoat’s Daughter (which won raves when it premiered at 2015’s Toronto International Film Festival), and I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, which Yahoo Movies’ Ethan Alter chose as one of his favorite films at Toronto in 2016. U.S. audiences will see the latter film first, via Netflix; the film’s just-released oblique debut trailer (watch it above) suggests it’ll be an ideal option for those looking for some chills this Halloween weekend.

The clip introduces us to Lily (Ruth Wilson), who appears to have come to live with, and care for, an elderly novelist (Paula Prentiss). That sounds ordinary enough, although Lily’s strange comportment and even stranger narration implies that she’s not altogether there. More chillingly, something unholy seems afoot in this barren 19th century farmhouse abode, particularly in the deep, dark doorways at which Lily can’t stop staring.

Delivering tantalizing hints of malevolent madness without ever actually spelling out exactly what is going on, the premiere trailer for I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House does exactly what it should: It makes us want to put it on now to unravel its sinister mysteries — but we’ll all have to bide our time until Friday, Oct. 28, when Netflix gives us full run of Perkins’ creepy new House.
