Rosario Dawson in Negotiations to Star in X-Men Spinoff ‘New Mutants’

Rosario Dawson is in talks to star in X-Men spinoff “New Mutants,” a person close to the project told TheWrap.

Dawson will play Dr. Cecilia Reyes. Her character in the spinoff acts as a mentor for the young adult ensemble cast that already includes “Games of Thrones” star Maisie Williams and “Split” star Anya Taylor-Joy.

Williams is set to play Rahne Sinclair, or Wolfsbane, who must figure out how to reconcile her ability to turn into a wolf with her religious beliefs. Taylor-Joy is Illyana Rasputin, or Magik, a sorceress that uses teleportation and discs to travel. “New Mutants” will focus on their adventures with more mutants yet to be named.

The movie is on track to begin production in July and has a release date of April 13, 2018. Josh Boone, the director, and Knate Lee are writers and Simon Kinberg and Karen Rosenfelt are producing the superhero film.

Dawson currently plays nurse Claire Temple on the Netflix Marvel shows “Daredevil,” “Luke Cage” and “Iron Fist.” Her character is one thread that pulls all of the stories together. Netflix releases “The Defenders” on August 18, which will include all of the superheroes from their Marvel shows and will also feature Dawson.

Dawson is repped by CAA.
