Steven Spielberg, Jordan Peele, Jason Blum and Will Packer were some of the top-end filmmaking talents on hand Thursday for the grand opening of the new Universal Cinema at Universal CityWalk.
Speaking to hundreds of fans waiting eagerly outside the theater, Universal Studio chairman Ron Meyer explained what sets this new theater apart.
"We wanted to create a venue that was equal to how filmmakers watch movies. As you will soon see, each theater offers an environment equivalent to a Hollywood screening room," the exec said.
The brand-new theaters were designed to resemble studio screening rooms, with luxurious, reclining leather seats, Dolby Atmos immersive surround sound and Christie RGB laser projection systems. A presentation of clips from Universal films showcased the theaters' crisp visuals and booming new sound system.
Spielberg spoke about the importance of movie theaters to making films themselves great.
"As a filmmaker, we create movies that invite moviegoers to enter other worlds, even if it's just for a couple of hours," the director said. "In the best case scenario, the moviegoing experience and its venue are on par with the movie that you came to enjoy. So Universal Cinema defines advancement and technology with this incredible new movie theater."
