‘The Favourite,’ ‘Roma’ and ‘A Star Is Born’ Lead BAFTA Nominations

Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite,” Alfonso Cuarón’s “Roma” and Bradley Cooper’s “A Star Is Born” are among the top films of 2018 as selected by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), which announced its nominations on Wednesday morning in London.

Those films will compete with “Green Book” and “BlacKkKlansman” in the Best Film category at the EE British Academy Film Awards, which will take place on Feb. 10 at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

“The Favourite” easily led all films in nominations with 12, five more than runners-up “Roma,” “A Star Is Born,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “First Man,” which each received seven. “Vice” received six nominations, “BlacKkKlansman” five, and “Green Book” and “Cold War” four each.

Golden Globe winner “Bohemian Rhapsody” was not nominated in the top BAFTA category, but it did receive a nomination in the Outstanding British Film category, alongside “Beast,” “The Favourite,” “McQueen,” “Stan & Ollie” and “You Were Never Really Here.”

The Best Director category includes four of the directors whose movies were nominated for Best Film — Spike Lee for “BlacKkKlansman,” Cuarón for “Roma,” Cooper for “A Star Is Born” and Lanthimos for “The Favourite” — along with “Cold War” director Pawel Pawlikowski instead of “Green Book” director Peter Farrelly.

The BAFTA acting categories feature many of the same face-offs expected to take place at the Oscars: Glenn Close (“The Wife”), Lady Gaga (“A Star Is Born”), Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”), Melissa McCarthy (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) were nominated in leading actress, for instance, alongside Viola Davis for “Widows.”

Alfonso Cuarón received six separate nominations for “Roma,” putting him in line to receive statuettes for Best Film, Best Film Not in the English Language, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Editing. Bradley Cooper received five separate nominations for “A Star Is Born,” in the categories of Best Film, Best Leading Actor, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Music.

The lead actor race features Cooper for “A Star Is Born,” Viggo Mortensen for “Green Book,” Steve Coogan for “Stan & Ollie” and two Golden Globe winners, Christian Bale for “Vice” and Rami Malek for “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

Supporting nominees include Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz for “The Favourite,” Amy Adams and Sam Rockwell for “Vice,” Mahershala Ali for “Green Book,” Adam Driver for “BlacKkKlansman” and Richard E. Grant for “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”

“Black Panther” only received a single nomination, for visual effects. “If Beale Street Could Talk” received two, for music and adapted screenplay.

Since the Oscars expanded the number of Best Picture nominees in 2009, 41 of the 45 BAFTA Best Film nominees have gone on to receive Oscar nominations, and five of the nine winners have also won the Oscar for Best Picture.

Last year, all five BAFTA best-film nominees also became Oscar Best Picture nominees, as did four of the five nominees in each of the four acting categories. The eventual Oscar winner, “The Shape of Water,” received more BAFTA nominations than any other film, but “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” won the top prize in the London ceremony.
