'Rogue One' Star Felicity Jones on Equal Pay for Actresses, Jyn Erso as Feminist Role
For years, female stars been paid far less than their male co-stars in Hollywood. But attitudes are hopefully changing, and actresses including Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams, and Robin Wright have made public appeals for equal pay. Now another star has joined their ranks: Rogue One lead actress Felicity Jones.
In an interview with Glamour, the Oscar-nominated actress (for 2014’s The Theory of Everything) shared, “I want to be paid fairly for the work that I’m doing. That’s what every single woman around the world wants. We want to be paid on parity with a man in a similar position. And I think it’s important to talk about it.” Jones, according to an article in The Hollywood Reporter, earned the biggest paycheck on Rogue One, which is fitting as she is its star.
Jones, being a feminist, had positive things to say about her Rogue One character, Jyn Erso. “What I love in my work is being able to explore a full-sided woman and not patronize her,” Jones shared. “Particularly with Jyn, it’s such a rare opportunity to be able to play a female who’s not just thinking about relationships.”
Also in a change of pace from all too many sci-fi movies, Jyn Erso won’t be sexualized. Jones told Glamour, “We don’t even see Jyn’s arms! That’s not her priority. She’s a survivor, and she has a mission to complete. … A female friend of mine said, ‘I love that Jyn looks how we look, with trousers and a long-sleeved top.’ We aren’t in hot pants. When do women walk around wearing hot pants?”
