‘Rogue One’ Might Not Use Iconic ‘Star Wars’ Element

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was never going to be exactly like any Star Wars film that came before it. A lot of this is due to the nature of the story: Instead of an epic battle between good of evil, it is more of a self-contained heist movie. Then there are the aesthetics. Director Gareth Edwards is working with a darker palette and incorporating far more handheld camera work.

There’s a change Rogue One might make that will surprise you. Every Star Wars film has started with its iconic crawl, where we get some real quick backstory before we see the actors. Because you need to crawl before you Sky-walk-er, right? According to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, that crawl might not be used this time.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Kennedy said, “The crawl and some of those elements live so specifically within the ‘saga’ films that we are having a lot of discussion about what will define the [stand-alone] Star Wars stories separate and apart from the saga films. So we’re right in the middle of talking about that.”

That same EW article pointed out that whatever changes are made to differentiate their “stories” from their “sagas” will probably be used for their upcoming young Han Solo feature.
