Robert Redford Doesn’t Want Remakes of His Movies

Robert Redford has been involved with some of the greatest films in the history of cinema. Whether it was lending his acting talents to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President’s Men or directing Ordinary People and Quiz Show, a lot of his work has stood the test of time.

Yahoo Movies chatted with the Hollywood icon while he was promoting Pete’s Dragon, a remake of the 1977 film, so we wondered how Redford felt about the idea of his own films being remade. Turns out he’s against it.

“I would rather not have a remake,” Redford told us. “There are too many stories to tell to redo or remake [old ones]. I think the idea of doing a sequel or a remake is a waste of time, a waste of money, and a waste of energy. There are too many stories to tell, there are too many new stories to tell to waste your time and money on a story already told.”

Hollywood has certainly made a habit of late remaking, rebooting, and reimagining movies. As we mentioned, Pete’s Dragon is an example of that. Perhaps Redford doesn’t mind taking on roles in projects that are remakes of work less celebrated and awarded than his own. Regardless, filmmakers and studios should take note — if you want to remake the works of Robert Redford, you’re not likely to get his blessing.

“A lot of the stories I told, or the films that I made, stand on their own,” Redford said. “I wouldn’t want to see a remake of Butch Cassidy or The Way We Were. There’s been talk about that, but I always say no. Leave it alone.“
