Robert Downey Jr. Joins ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ But Michael Keaton Role Now In Doubt

Iron Man has officially accepted an invitation to enter Spider-Man’s world.

An item in The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Robert Downey, Jr. will join the cast of the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming. During a presentation Tuesday at CinemaCon, Sony, the studio behind the web-slinger franchise, not only announced the title but also showed a brief clip from the movie that featured Downey’s Tony Stark meeting Peter Parker, played by Tom Holland. So the idea that Stark/Iron Man would cross over from the Marvel-via-Disney realm to the Marvel-via-Sony one was already out there. The THR report simply makes it more official.

On the other side of the ledger, it appears Michael Keaton’s reported participation in Spider-Man: Homecoming has hit a snag. Keaton was said to be in talks to join the film in an unspecified villain role but both Deadline and Variety are reporting that’s now looking unlikely.
