Rian Johnson Celebrates 'Star Wars: Episode VIII' Milestone With New Behind-the-Scenes Pictures

Rian Johnson has shared some news on his Tumblr account about Star Wars: Episode VIII: They’re halfway done with filming. The production, which started back in February, on the same island The Force Awakens left audiences, is still a ways away from coming to theaters. VIII comes out in December 2017. Thank goodness we can count on Rogue One this December.

Attached to this news were two photos from the set of the much-anticipated film. The first one shows a pilot in his X-wing, and possibly a little bit of a droid there in the back. The second picture appears to be on a ship belonging to the First Order.

This isn’t the first time Johnson has shared something from the set. Earlier in April he shared a picture featuring Maz Kanata, and in March, it was the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon. Unfortunately — or fortunately, if you don’t want anything spoiled — these pictures don’t tell us that much about what we can expect in the movie, but it’s neat to see these snaps after J.J. Abrams treated Episode VII like it was a state secret.

In other Star Wars news, a flightless weevil discovered in Papua New Guinea has been named the Trigonopterus chewbacca because of its dense fur and because they knew they’d get attention for it, probably.

Also, Room star and big Star Wars fan Jacob Tremblay is continuing to use his charms to get what he wants — he told People that Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow told him he’d try to get him a part. Pays to be cute. I’ve heard.
