The Griswolds Hit the Road in the Red-Band 'Vacation' Trailer (NSFW)

The Griswold family is heading back to Walley World — and maybe it will be open this time? Above is the very NSFW red-band trailer for Vacation, the next-generation reboot of 1983’s road-trip comedy National Lampoon’s Vacation (in theaters July 29). The trailer opens with a flash back to the original film, starring Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo as the parents who take their children on a disastrous cross-country trek. In the new film, their grown son Rusty Griswold (Ed Helms) decides to take re-create that vacation with his own wife (Christina Applegate) and children, in order to visit the moose-themed amusement park before it shutters forever. “My trip to Walley World when I was a kid was the best time I ever had,” Rusty says, continuing the original franchise’s theme of remembering vacations selectively. (“When I was a boy, just about every summer we’d take a vacation,” Rusty’s dad told him in the first film, “and you know, in 18 years, we never had fun.”)

The new Vacation picks up on the raunchy, gross-out humor of the original, which spawned three increasingly outlandish sequels: National Lampoon’s European Vacation (1985), National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989), and Vegas Vacation (1997).  During their new cross-country adventure, Rusty’s family swims in raw sewage, learns about glory holes, and has a close encounter with Chris Hemsworth’s boxer briefs. Nods to the first movie include an appearance by Rusty’s sister Audrey (played here by Leslie Mann); a cameo from Chase and D’Angelo as the senior Griswolds; and a sight gag involving another girl in a red Ferrari (famously played in the 1983 film by Christie Brinkley). But the trailer takes pains to assure us that it won’t get bogged down in nostalgia. “I’ve never even heard of the original vacation,” one of Rusty’s sons tells him. “Doesn’t matter,” he replies. “The new vacation will stand on its own.”
