‘President Ellis’ Talks Avengers, Thaddeus Ross in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ Video

Marvel has released a neat little video to help promote Captain America: Civil War. This is good, because I’m not sure people are aware it’s coming out Friday. WHIH Newsfront is a news program in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and its lead anchor is Christine Everhart. She is of course played by Leslie Bibb, an MCU original character — who appeared as the journalist allll the way back in the first Iron Man in 2008. In her most recent “special report,” she appears alongside Al Madrigal as political correspondent Will Adams to interview the president of the United States — Matthew Ellis.

Ellis, played by William Sadler, referenced events in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, when Black Widow leaked S.H.I.E.L.D.’s data to help defeat Hydra, and in Avengers: Age of Ultron, when there was basically an unsanctioned war in Sokovia. “We’ve experienced a series of grave events that have had had severe repercussions,” he said. “I am completely sensitive to the fear and concern that creates.”

“My appreciation for their efforts shouldn’t be misconstrued as a blank check,” Ellis continued. “The Avengers need to collaborate with governments around the globe. That’s why my administration is exploring ways to create an official relationship with these heroes.”

That “official relationship” is of course one of the things that pits Captain America against Iron Man. Iron Man wants them to sign up to work for the government; Captain America doesn’t trust the government. The conversation then moved to William Hurt’s character, Gen. Thaddeus Ross. We have previously seen him in trailers pushing the Avengers to fall in line. “He has longstanding relationships with many of these heroes, and was instrumental in spearheading the response to the emergencies at both Culver University and Harlem,” Ellis said. “He served this country with distinction for several decades, and I believe he can work with our allies abroad and alongside these heroes.”

Ross was previously seen in The Incredible Hulk, messing things up by creating Abomination to try to take out our big green buddy. Really, it’s crazy to think this country would ever allow a dangerous, incompetent person to be in a position of power. But I guess that’s just comic books for ya.
