It's hard out here for a dwarf Central to the story of "The Hobbit" films are the company of dwarves who set out to reclaim their ancestral home from a fire-breathing dragon. Led by Thorin Oakenshield, the dwarves Fili, Kili, Oin, Gloin (father of "Lord of the Rings"' Gimli), Dwalin, Balin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Dori, Nori, and Ori, all differ in appearance, age, and bearing. All the actors playing them required a great deal of time in hair, makeup, and wardrobe to make their dwarvish transformations. As one of the youngest and thus most beardless dwarves, Kili (Aidan Turner) required the shortest time in the makeup chair at only 30 minutes. Bombastic Bombur (Stephen Hunter) on the other hand, required over 105 minutes every day to transform him into the rolly polly dwarf.
