5 Most Outstanding Paul Giamatti Performances Gallery 2010 American Splendor
American Splendor (2003): As comic book writer Harvey Pekar, Giamatti finally got a shot at a leading role, and he was tremendous. This surprising and inventive film, which was part-documentary, part-fictionalized depiction of Pekar's life and work, often found Giamatti playing the part alongside the actual Pekar himself. He always felt real, writing about the things we all complain about, grousing even after finding love and building a family. Giamatti found the vulnerability beneath the writer's cantankerous demeanor, especially when Pekar learned he'd been diagnosed with testicular cancer. It's one of the best films of the last decade.
