'Phantom Thread' trailer: Daniel Day-Lewis turns fashion designer in final film role
Paul Thomas Anderson is rarely forthcoming about new projects, but the secrecy surrounding his latest movie, Phantom Thread, has been particularly pronounced. With the premiere of the film’s first official trailer today, we’re finally getting a look at what the enigmatic director has planned for his eighth feature, and Daniel Day-Lewis’s last. That’s right, Day-Lewis is stepping away from acting — for good, this time — after the Christmastime release of Phantom Thread, which marks his first collaboration with Anderson since There Will Be Blood won the actor his second of three Oscars … and made the world safe for “I drink your milkshake” jokes.
Our first glimpses of Phantom Thread (watch the trailer above) confirm that the film is another ’50s period piece in the vein of The Master, only this time dressed up in haute couture London fashion. Day-Lewis plays Reynolds Woodcock, whose dresses are worn by only the elitist of the city’s elite. Mike Leigh mainstay Lesley Manville plays Reynolds’s sister and business partner, Cyril, while Vicky Krieps plays his young muse, Alma. As that relationship turns personal, though, his carefully threaded world starts to unravel. This being a Paul Thomas Anderson joint, it’s safe to assume that we’re only scratching the surface of the movie’s narrative and thematic ambitions. Think of this as only the first step toward getting the film runway-ready for awards season.
Phantom Thread opens in theaters on Dec. 25.
