At 71, Martin Scorsese is considered among the greatest of American filmmakers. Back in the 1960s, however, the future director of Taxi Driver, Gangs of New York, and The Departed was just another film student at Washington Square College, now known as New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. In May, Scorsese, whose latest project is the documentary The 50 Year Argument, returned to his alma mater to give a funny, heartfelt commencement speech.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese is planning to direct a movie about the iconic punk rock band The Ramones, an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap. There is no timetable in place since there’s no writer on board yet, but Scorsese wouldn’t turn his attention to the Ramones project until after he wraps his next movie Silence, which heads into production next year. Also read: A Beer Run for The Ramones Comprised of lead singer Joey, guitarist Johnny, drummer Tommy and bassist Dee Dee, The Ramones started playing their first live shows 40 years ago in 1974. Joey died in 2001, followed by Dee Dee in 2002, guitarist Johnny passed in 2004, and Tommy died earlier this year.
