How to Train Your Dragon 2 opened in theaters yesterday, and if you're a parent, then you're probably still reflexively covering your children's eyes. What makes this death even more disturbing is that the fire-starter in question is Toothless, the cute, cuddly dragon who's been beloved by kids since the first Dragon film was released in 2011. Maybe we shouldn't have been surprised: After all, Dragon director Dean DeBlois has told interviewers he prepared for the film in part by studying the elaborate narratives of the Star Wars films, particularly The Empire Strikes Back.
Taking place five years after the events of the first movie, How to Train Your Dragon 2 finds our Viking hero Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) a confident young man, who spends his days on adventures with his dragon friend Toothless. In this clip, we see Hiccup and his friends coming to the defense of a new character: Hiccup’s long-lost mother Valka (Cate Blanchet). Valka, we learn, has been raising a colony of dragons on an island haven — now under attack by a winged army led by the villainous Drago (Djimon Hounsou). Just when things are looking bleak, Valka unleashes her secret weapon: the colossal Bewilderbeast.
