'Pee-wee's Big Holiday' Trailer: Meet the New Pee-wee, Who's the Same as the Old Pee-wee

The trailer for the long-gestating Pee-wee Herman comeback movie, Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, arrived online this morning, and it’s clearly designed to induce Pee-wee’s Big Adventure flashbacks.

Like that 1985 Tim Burton film centered around Paul Reubens’ childlike, red-bow-tie wearing alter ego, Pee-wee’s Big Holiday apparently involves a road trip, encounters with eccentric characters, and dudes on motorcycles. (Well, at least one dude, who happens to be Magic Mike XXL star Joe Manganiello.) It also involves Reubens looking like he hasn’t aged a day since his TV show, Pee-wee’s Playhouse, went off the air in 1990, but the actor has been upfront about why that’s the case. in a recent interview with the New York Times Magazine, he said his appearance has been digitally retouched in post-production to make the 63-year-old look younger. “I feel I’m too old to be in a Pee-wee Herman movie without that,” he says.

Basically, the only things missing from the trailer are an “I know you are but what am I?” and the use of the song “Tequila.” But perhaps the movie — produced by Judd Apatow, directed by John Lee of Broad City and Wonder Showzen fame and debuting on Netflix March 18 — will deliver one or both of those, as well as a good, old-fashioned “Mecca lecca hi, mecca hiney ho.”
