Publisher Cancels Deen's No. 1 Selling Cookbook

The publisher for Paula's Deen's yet-to-be released cookbook -- which on Friday was the top seller on Amazon and Barnes & Noble -- says it has canceled publication of the book.

"After careful consideration, Ballantine Books has made the difficult decision to cancel the publication of 'Paula Deen's New testament: 250 Favorite Recipes, All Lightened Up,'" said the publisher Friday in a statement to ET of the celebrity chef's latest work, originally scheduled for an October 2013 release.

The soaring of her book to No. 1 bucked the trend by major corporations to dump the embattled TV chef amid the controversy over her use of a racial slur.

Paula Deen's New Testament: 250 Favorite Recipes, All Lightened Up rose from a low ranking in the 1,500s earlier in the week to No. 1 on the online bookseller Amazon.com. At No. 2 on Amazon's best-selling book list was Deen's previous cookbook, Paula Deen's Southern Cooking Bible.

Deen, 66, was let go from Food Network last week after coming under fire for revealing in a court case deposition that she admitted using the N-word in the past. Several major corporations announced this week that they were severing ties with the celebrity chef, including ham producer Smithfield Foods, Caesars Entertainment, Home Depot, Walmart, Target and most recently, Sears, J.C. Penney and Kmart.
