Elysium Blasts Past We're The Millers
We're the Millers proved to be no match for Elysium. The sci-fi thriller starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster flew past Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis' comedy this weekend, debuting in the No. 1 spot with $30.4 million.
Elysium is slowly but surely climbing to the top of the weekend box office, according to early numbers from The Hollywood Reporter. The new Matt Damon sci-fi flick, directed by Neill Blomkamp, grossed some $11.2 million on its opening day. The film, also starring Jodie Foster and Diego Luna, is projected to net around 30 million.
In 2009, writer-director Neill Blomkamp had an incredible debut with District 9. The film grossed over $200 million worldwide, was a critical darling and nabbed a best picture nomination at the Oscars. For his follow-up, Elysium, he's got a bigger idea, a bigger budget and even some big name stars. Critically, Elysium has been receiving positive reviews overall, but there's definitely more of mixed reception vibe-feeling than with D9.
