Oscar Noms Snafu: ‘Dick Poop’ Nominated

"Dick Poop" was probably pretty surprised to hear about his Oscar nomination on Thursday morning — er, make that Dick Pope.

When Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs read the list of nominees for the cinematography category, she accidentally said “Poop” instead of “Pope.” But she quickly corrected herself. Pope was nominated for his work on Mr. Turner.

Pope is actually a veteran cinematographer with numerous credits to his name, in addition to awards and nominations. This is his first Oscar nom.

Meanwhile, if you were one of the many reporters looking for more information on the Oscar nominations immediately following Thursday’s announcement, then you were out of luck.

The Academy issued a press release with all the nominees that included a link to a press kit. But that link took users to a site with the header “Down for Maintenance” above an Oscar silhouette. The page read: “This section of Oscars.org is currently undergoing scheduled maintenance. Please check back with us at a later time.”

After a few moments, the page redirected to the Oscars.org homepage. The site began working about a half-hour later.

Eight films were nominated for best picture on Thursday morning: American Sniper, Birdman, Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, Selma, The Theory of Everything and Whiplash.
