TORONTO - Kim Nguyen's Congo child-soldier drama Rebelle (War Witch) on Thursday received a nomination for best feature film at the upcoming Director’s Guild of Canada Awards.
But despite earlier sweeping the Canadian Screen Awards and the Jutras, Quebec's film awards, Montreal-based director Nguyen was overlooked in the DGC kudosfest’s best film director category.
The French-language Rebelle film, which also contended at the Academy Awards in the best foreign-language film category, will compete at the DGC Awards in the best feature category against Deepa Mehta’s Midnight’s Children, Michael McGowan’s Still Mine and Sean Garrity’s My Awkward Sexual Adventure.
The best feature direction competition will see Moving Day’s Mike Clattenburg vie against Emanuel Hoss-Desmarais for Whitewash, Still Mine’s McGowan and Sudz Sutherland for Home Again.
Sutherland also received a nomination in the best TV movie direction category for The Phantoms, a CBC TV movie.
And the best dramatic series competition will see The Borgias and Continuum face off against Flashpoint, which recently ended a five-season run, and Saving Hope, the medical drama.
The 12th annual DGC awards will be handed out on October 26, 2013 in Toronto.
