'Once' Leads Nominees for 2012 Tony Awards

"Once," the musical based on the 2006 film of the same name, topped the nominees for the 2012 Tony Awards, announced Tuesday at the New York Public Library by Jim Parsons of "The Big Bang Theory" and Kristin Chenoweth of "GCB."

The musical (starring Steve Kazee and Cristin Milioti, left) received 11 nominations, while "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It" each received ten.

On the play side, Disney's "Peter and the Starcatcher" received nine nods, while the revival of "Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman" received seven.

The Best Musical category was dominated by film-to-stage productions. "Once," "Newsies," "Leap of Faith" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It" received nods, shutting out the costly and problem-plagued "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" and the U.K. import "Ghost: The Musical."

Bruce Norris' 2011 Pulitzer Prize-winning play, "Clybourne Park," Jon Robin Baitz's "Other Desert Cities," Rick Elice's "Peter and the Starcatcher" and David Ives' "Venus in Fur" were nominated in the Best Play category.

The Best Actor race pits an Oscar winner and three Oscar nominees against an Olivier nominee: Philip Seymour Hoffman ("Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman"), James Earl Jones ("Gore Vidal's The Best Man"), Frank Langella (Man and Boy"), John Lithgow ("The Columnist") and James Corden ("One Man, Two Guvnors").

Nina Arianda ("Venus in Fur"), Tracie Bennett ("End of the Rainbow"), Stockard Channing ("Other Desert Cities"), Linda Lavin ("The Lyons") and Cynthia Nixon ("Wit") received Best Actress nominations.

Also nominated in the Featured Actor category was "Amazing Spider-Man" and "Social Network" star Andrew Garfield (center, with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Finn Wittrock), making his Broadway debut in "Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman."

The Tony Awards, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, will be broadcast live from the Beacon Theatre in New York on June 10 on CBS.
