Amy Adams has a terrible secret — but looks amazing — in this first teaser for Nocturnal Animals, the noir thriller about an insomniac art gallery owner Susan (Adams) whose ex-husband Tony (Jake Gyllenhaal) dedicates a novel to her. In the fictional story, shown onscreen as Adams reads it, a man resembling Tony enlists the help of a local sheriff (Michael Shannon) to seek revenge on someone who terrorized his family. What does the novel have to do with Susan’s real life? “It’s violent and it’s sad and he dedicated it to me,” she says in the trailer — and one senses that she might know why. “I did something horrible to him,” she confesses. Noturnal Animals is the sophomore feature from fashion designer Tom Ford, whose 2009 drama A Single Man resulted in an Academy Award nomination for star Colin Firth. His new film was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice International Film Festival this month and screened at the Toronto International Film Festival last week; it opens in theaters on Nov. 18.
