An Ode to the Poor Newscasters in Disaster Movies

We’re pulling together our go bags for Friday’s release of Dwayne Johnson’s earthquake flick San Andreas. And as part of our emergency prep, we took a look back at some of the more memorable disaster films of the last 20 years, and we realized that, believe it or not, the most heroic people aren’t always the muscular stars that risk their lives to save their fellow citizens.

No, the real heroes are the newscasters that stand in the middle of the destruction and relay the apocalyptic updates to panicked viewers. It’s a noble sacrifice, and often a necessary one, because filmmakers have to get that dry, expository information to audiences somehow!

Our super-cut of unsung heroes above includes the local newscaster who gets flattened by a tornado in The Day After Tomorrow, the foreign correspondent who visits the mass suicide site in 2012, and Today stars/shark killers Matt Lauer and Al Roker.
