Gangster Squad, Warner Bros.’ film following a group of LAPD officers who go up against a big mob boss in Los Angeles, has a star-studded cast including Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling.
But one other star of Ruben Fleischer’s 1940s film is the city of Los Angeles itself. Many of old Hollywood’s most glamorous spots are featured in the film, including the Hollywood Sign, a nightclub called Slapsy Maxie's and Chinatown.
At the premiere for the film, which opens Jan. 11, The Hollywood Reporter spoke with some of the movie’s stars about their own favorite places in the City of Angels.
Emma Stone, who plays aspiring actress Grace Faraday, who is dating mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn):
“I like the Apple Pan on Pico. It’s been around since 1947, so it was around in that era. It’s pretty cool.”
Director Ruben Fleischer:
“I have so many favorite places in L.A. I love Hollywood. I lived on the corner of Hollywood and Vine for three years. I lived in Echo Park for nine years. So, old Hollywood’s always been a big part of my L.A. existence. If I had to choose one? The Prince in Koreatown is a classic. You feel like you go back in time when you go to that bar, and it’s just a classic, classic place.”
Mireille Enos, who plays Connie O'Mara, wife of Sgt. John O'Mara (Josh Brolin):
“Right now, we just moved into a house in Lake Hollywood, and that whole area around the hills and the lake is so picturesque and beautiful.”
Giovanni Ribisi, who plays a member of the gangster squad, Detective Conway Keeler:
“I like the Griffith Park Observatory. Rebel Without a Cause was shot there, of course. And then, it’s a place where you can look at the stars.”
Robert Patrick, who plays Detective Max Kennard, a member of the gangster squad:
“My favorite place in L.A. is where I live. It’s in the Hollywood Hills. My house and my family, that’s my favorite place.”
Josh Pence, a Los Angeles native who plays former LAPD chief Daryl Gates:
“I love Philippe’s, the French dip place downtown. I’m still discovering things about this city. There are so many locations that just pop up, it just blows my mind. I love the beach out on the Westside too, up in Malibu. Also, I have so many great memories of Dodger Stadium with my parents and my family.”
