Disney Channel has given a second-season order to its upcoming animated show Tangled: The Series, based on the 2010 hit movie from Walt Disney Animation Studios.
The show, a production of Disney Television Animation, finds Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi reprising their roles as Rapunzel and Eugene (formerly known as Flynn Rider), respectively. The story, which takes place between the events of the 2010 feature and the start of the 2012 short film Tangled Ever After, follows Rapunzel on her adventures as she acquaints herself with her parents, her kingdom of Corona and its people.
Tangled: The Series also reunites the music team of Oscar-winning composer (and Disney veteran) Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater. Chris Sonnenburg serves as executive producer and supervising director.
It's set to debut at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 24. Additionally, the original movie, Tangled Before Ever After, will premiere two weeks earlier, at 8 p.m. Friday, March 10. Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer at Disney Channels Worldwide, announced the series' renewal Wednesday morning.
The show's cast also includes Julie Bowen as Rapunzel's mother, Queen Arianna; Broadway star Eden Espinosa (Wicked) as Rapunzel's handmaiden and confidant, Cassandra; comedian Jeff Ross as Hook Hand's brother Hook Foot; and Richard Kind as Uncle Monty. Jeffrey Tambor, Paul F. Tompkins and M.C. Gainey, who all voiced roles in the original movie, are reprising their roles.
Also among the cast are Sean Hayes, Peter MacNicol, Clancy Brown, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Diedrich Bader, Charles Halford, Steve Blum, James Monroe Iglehart, Jeremy Jordan and Jonathan Banks.
Tangled was first ordered to series in June 2015. Since then, Moore has gone on to star in NBC's hit drama This Is Us, while Levi co-starred in NBC's Telenovela opposite Eva Longoria.
Debuting over Thanksgiving in 2010, Tangled opened with $68.7 million and went on to earn $200 million domestically and more than $593 million globally, becoming one of Walt Disney Animation Studios' biggest releases of all time. It was nominated for Golden Globe and Critics Choice awards for best animated film as well as best song for "I See the Light," which won a Grammy Award and was nominated for an Oscar.

Tangled: The Series was developed by Sonnenburg and Shane Prigmore, with Sonnenburg serving as executive producer and supervising director. Benjamin Balistreri is supervising producer. Kevin Kliesch serves as score composer.
The news of Tangled's renewal comes two days after Disney Channel said it had renewed Elena of Avalor, which centers on a brave and adventurous teenager who rules her kingdom as crown princess, for a third season ahead of its season-two premiere later this year.
In addition, a line of role-play products, dolls and play sets inspired by Tangled: The Series will debut at New York Toy Fair on Saturday and hit retail stores in the fall.
