Conventional box-office wisdom suggests that American comedies don't play well in foreign countries. Universal's "American Reunion" shots some holes in that theory over the weekend, grossing $34 million from 49 overseas territories.
That raised its foreign cume to $117.2 million, well ahead of its U.S. grosses to this point, which are $55.3 million, according to box office data firm Rentrak.
Another Universal entry, "Battleship," took in $11 million from 52 countries over the weekend to raise its overseas grosses to $200.1 million after five weeks in release. The movie opens in the U.S. on May 18.
Warners' "The Lucky One" also took in $11 million overseas this weekend, from 28 territories. It's foreign cume is $18 million.
"The Hunger Games" took in another $10 million from 59 territories, giving it an overall overseas gross of $237 million. Its worldwide gross is now $617.7 million.
