New 'Rogue One' Featurette Connects the 'Star Wars' Dots

Anyone who’s still confused about how Rogue One fits into the big Star Wars picture will be grateful for this new behind-the-scenes featurette, which sets up the story while offering some new footage from the film. Remember the text crawl at the beginning of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope? “That is essentially our movie,” explains Rogue One director Gareth Edwards. In the film, criminal-turned-heroine Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) leads a mission to capture the Empire’s plans for the Death Star — the same plans that Luke Skywalker and his fellow pilots use to plot its destruction in A New Hope. The events of Rogue One, therefore, lead directly to the formation of the Rebel Alliance. Watch the new clip above.

Like The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams, Edwards considers making a Star Wars film the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. “If I’d known since I was four that I was going to be shooting a Star Wars film, I would have planned it all my life,” he says, describing his film set as “like being that kid again, with Star Wars figures.” According to Felicity Jones, working amongst the Stormtroopers and droids of the Star Wars universe is just as surreal as one would expect. “You can feel everyone in the crew and the cast kind of stop and takes that in,” she says, “and you remember, ‘Oh, we’re actually in Star Wars.‘”

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens in theaters on December 16.
