Will Smith in a Photo and More Make 'Independence Day: Resurgence' Trailer Perfect for Flashback Friday

The second trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence, the sequel to 1996′s Independence Day, emphasizes the new movie’s connections to the old.

It shows us Jessie Usher’s Dylan Dubrow-Hiller, the stepson of Will Smith’s character from the original film, looking reverently at a photo of his stepdad, presumably before facing down some aliens and delivering his own version of the “Welcome to Earth” line.

It features former first daughter Patricia Whitmore (Maika Monroe) earnestly telling her boyfriend (Liam Hemsworth) about how “we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for him,” meaning former President Thomas Whitmore (Bill Pullman).

There’s also a lot of talk about the significance of commemorating the 20th anniversary of the catastrophic 1996 alien attacks, courtesy of both the current president, played by Sela Ward, who sounds an awful lot like Hillary Clinton, and the former one.

“We convinced an entire generation that this was a battle that we could win,” Pullman says while sporting what appears to be David Letterman’s retirement beard. “We sacrificed for each other, no matter what the cost. And that’s worth fighting for.”

Guess what? (You’ll never guess.) Looks like it’s going to be worth fighting for again, because the bad E.T.s are back and, as Jeff Goldblum (who’s also back) notes, they still like to get the landmarks.

We can all watch those aliens once again attempt to satisfy their appetite for destruction when Independence Day: Resurgence opens in theaters on June 24.
