New 'Fifty Shades' Book Stolen Before Publication

Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson in ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’

Call it Fifty Shades Stolen. A copy of Grey, E.L. James’s new companion book to her Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy, has gone missing from the publisher. Random House is now concerned that the author’s new work could be leaked online or sold to media outlets before its publication date of June 18. According to BBC News, Kent police in southern England have been investigating the theft since Monday.

On June 1, James announced the release of Grey, a new version of Fifty Shades of Grey written from kinky billionaire Christian Grey’s point of view. The original novel, and the 2014 film, are seen from the perspective of Anastasia Steele, the naive college student who falls in love with Christian.

“Christian is a complex character, and readers have always been fascinated by his desires and motivations, and his troubled past,” said the author. “Also, as anyone who has ever been in a relationship knows, there are two sides to every story. It’s been a great pleasure to return to my happy place — writing, being with Christian and Ana in their universe, and working with the fantastic team at Vintage.” James has said that she wrote Grey for the fans, dedicating the book to “those readers who asked…and asked… and asked… and asked for this.”

Grey is scheduled for release in paperback and ebook on June 18, the fictional Christian Grey’s birthday. However, it’s possible that the theft will pressure the publisher to release the book early. One thing’s for sure: Control freak Christian Grey would never have let security get this lax.
