Nathan Fillion's Speculated 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Role Would Be Awesome

Pictures have leaked from the set of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and with them, casting news might have been released. Sci-fi favorite Nathan Fillion, who first won our hearts as Captain Malcolm Reynolds on the canceled-too-soon show Firefly, appears to be playing Simon Williams, also known as Wonder Man.

Let’s go over Marvel’s Wonder Man, since, let’s be honest, almost none of us know who he is. Created in 1964 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, more than 20 years after DC’s Wonder Woman, Wonder Man has superhuman strength, stamina, durability, and can fly. He was born Simon Williams, the son of a munitions industrialist. However, unlike Tony Stark, Williams wasn’t able to keep his father’s company afloat. He embezzled money and went to jail. He was then freed by the Enchantress, brought to Baron Zemo, who experimented on him, and thus obtained those powers we mentioned.

Zemo intended to deploy Wonder Man against the Avengers, but Wonder Man wound up helping the Avengers and then … died. But! He was brought back to life through your typical comic book shenanigans. The whole dying thing kind of messed him up, leading him to be insecure and scared of battle, so he did what many people do when they’re afraid of existing in the real world: go off to Hollywood and try to be an actor.

Since Wonder Man isn’t a Marvel A-lister, he’s been retconned a bunch and has had several different plot lines, but it appears the acting career is the one Guardians will go with.

He ties into the Marvel universe mainly through The Avengers, so it’s not clear how he links to Guardians specifically. It’s been pointed out that we don’t know Fillion will even appear in the movie beyond these posters. He did have a cameo in the first movie, doing the voice of an inmate that confronts Star-Lord. But we hope this time, Fillion is there in the flesh, because he’s awesome and Guardians of the Galaxy is awesome, so it would just be … awesome.
