In First Full 'Mr. Holmes' Trailer, Ian McKellen Sets the Sherlock Record Straight

More clues about Ian McKellen’s exploits as Sherlock Holmes have emerged in the first full-length trailer for the upcoming Mr. Holmes.

In this adaptation of Mitch Cullen’s 2005 Holmes novel A Simple Trick of the Mind, the famed sleuth is an unwilling celebrity, thanks to the exaggerated stories of his exploits authored by his partner, Dr. John Watson (played here by Colin Starkey). Despite what an endless number Holmes’ fans think, he doesn’t like wearing a deerstalker cap — he prefers a top hat — and he doesn’t smoke a pipe; he takes his tobacco in cigars, thank you very much.

Still, the fame has allowed him to ease into a comfortable retirement. That is, until a new mystery — and an eager new sidekick, played by Milo Parker — forces him to return to sleuthing one last time and allows him to re-write his own story.

Mr. Holmes, which was directed and co-written by Oscar winner Bill Condon (Gods and Monsters), hits theaters on July 17.
