The Morgan Freeman Critter Cute-Meter: How Lemurs, Penguins and Dolphins Compare

Morgan Freeman has been blessed with one the greatest voices of our time, a commanding, rich roar that lends every thought expressed the utmost sophistication and sentimentality.

It’s why the Oscar-winning actor has become Hollywood’s go-to narrator in recent years, and Freeman has taken particular shine to voicing over the big-screen adventures of our animal friends.

That began in 2005 with the mega-hit “March of the Penguins” and continues this week with the eye-popping 3-D Imax documentary "Madagascar: Island of Lemurs," which looks at the inspiring yet troubling plight of the remarkable primates in their native land off the east coast of Africa.

We had a few hard-hitting issues we needed to press Freeman on at the recent press day for “Island of Lemurs.” First, these lemurs, who’ve been all the rage around playpens lately thanks to the popularity of DreamWorks’ animated “Madagascar” series… are they cute or are they creepy?

"Cute, cute, cute, cute," Freeman says with conviction. "I couldn’t think of them as creepy. "There’s such intelligence. When they look at you, they’re looking at you.”

OK, but let’s break this lemur cuteness down a bit. Where do they rank on the cute scale of 1-100?

"Probably in the high-80s or 90s," Freeman says.

What about his beloved penguins? They rank pretty low on the Freeman Cute Scale, falling in the 60s.

"The cutest of all cute is the dolphin," Freeman adds. "They have set the benchmark for me."

Freeman, of course, has gotten to know those sea mammals well as star of the sleeper hit “Dolphin Tale” (and its upcoming sequel).

We told you the guys loves his animals.
