'Morgan' Evokes 'Alien' in Latest Chilling Trailer

“Don’t Let It Out” is the tagline for this September’s sci-fi thriller Morgan — but based on its new full-length trailer (watch it above), perhaps the scientists in question should never have cooked up their young Morgan in the first place.

Produced by Ridley Scott and directed by his son Luke, Morgan concerns an investigator (Kate Mara) who’s hired to check in on a laboratory where scientists have made the age-old mistake of trying to play God — this time by creating a girl who’s been “bio-engineered with synthetic DNA” to be “the next step in evolution.” If that objective alone doesn’t sound foolhardy, these dolts have now locked her up in a tiny facility cell, where they observe her like a rat in a cage. Before long, Morgan is reacting to her circumstances by throwing a “tantrum” that costs Jennifer Jason Leigh an eye, and then breaking free from incarceration to unleash her fury on those who designed her (including Toby Jones, Rose Leslie, Boyd Holbrook, Michelle Yeoh, and Paul Giamatti).

From its imagery of industrial hallways bathed in fluorescent (and alarm-red) light, to its set-up involving a monster hunting a diverse group of engineers around a confined locale — not to mention its cool, composed female protagonist played by Mara — Morgan eerily recalls Ridley Scott’s Alien. If Luke is trying to emulate his dad’s horrifying 1979 sci-fi classic, he’s setting the bar very high. Nonetheless, the surface similarities between the two films do suggest that Morgan has the potential to be a more ferocious breed of supernatural thriller. We’ll find out when Morgan breaks into theaters on Sept. 2.
