Morbidly Obese Dachshund on Strict Diet to Shed 30 Pounds

An obese five-year-old dachshund named Obie, loved almost to death by his owners, is now on a diet and exercise schedule to shed at least 30 pounds of extra weight.

Obie’s journey, chronicled online at the Facebook page “Biggest Loser, Doxie Edition,” started with his previous owners, an aging couple who needed help taking care of the 77-pound dog (check out this video of the pup).

“Aging owners with failing health were simply loving him with food,” wrote Nora Vanatta, Obie’s new owner, on the Facebook page. “They just couldn’t say no to those big brown eyes.”

When a relative of the previous owners asked for help, Vanatta took up the cause. A Portland resident, Vanatta has a degree in animal science and has spent almost a decade working as a veterinary technician. She is aiming to get Obie to 30-40 pounds, about half of his current weight.

Obie, currently on a special high-protein and low-fat diet, will start swim therapy and exercising on the treadmill once he starts to lose some weight.

A visit to the vet showed that Obie is relatively healthy besides the weight, and since August 19, the doxie has lost six pounds—“two pounds a week, which is perfect,” Vanatta said.

“I feel tremendously blessed to be involved in his [Obie’s] rehabilitation and I am amazed at the outpouring of love and support that I have received,” Vanatta wrote.
