Tom Cruise Leaves Us Breathless in a New 'Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation' Trailer

Hanging off an airplane as it soars through the sky was just the appetizer.

The newest trailer for Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation, which you can see above, finds Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt upping the suicidal stunt ante once again. The promo clip opens on a brand new and equally insane set piece, with the ageless action star stretching the limits of his mortality once again: Here, he takes a swan dive into a treacherous whirlpool that cuts through 12 feet of concrete and contains 70,000 gallons of swirling and pressurized water, then open a hatch inside — all without the benefit of an oxygen tank.

If even reading those words leaves you short of breath, you’re not alone.

The new trailer reminds us of some of the previously revealed plot details, including the fact that Alec Baldwin plays the head of the CIA who is bent on shutting down the IMF, and that Hunt and the gang are up against a shadowy, evil-doing IMF-esque group called the Syndicate. Also, if the trailers have been any indication, Jeremy Renner’s William Brandt character is now stuck in a bureaucratic role within the team, which seems like a bummer.

Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation, which also co-stars Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson and Ving Rhames, hits theaters on July 31.
