A NYC Drug Dealer Used Minions and Olaf Dolls to Help Hide His Drugs
The Minions’ assault on the real world is escalating — and now they’ve gotten another, even more beloved animated character involved.
On Wednesday, the NYPD’s special prosecutor for narcotics announced that it had arrested five people alleged to have been running a drug trafficking scheme that involved sending cocaine in packages disguised as children’s birthday gifts — some of which contained stuffed Minions and Olaf from Frozen dolls. The packages, five of which were sent from Puerto Rico, contained two pounds of cocaine each, with a combined street value of $225,000.

The drugs were destined for an alleged dealer operating out of Harlem. The packages all held special gift bags; the actual drugs were hidden in boxes covered in “Happy Birthday” wrapping paper. Most of the bags, the NYPD said in a press release, contained stuffed Olaf dolls, while a Minion was stuffed into one of the illicit parcels.
“Kilos of cocaine were disguised as children’s birthday gifts, and shipped alongside innocent looking Olaf dolls and other toys, in a failed attempt to conceal the sinister contents,” Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget G. Brennan said in a statement.

This is Olaf’s first brush with the dark side, but the Minions have been wreaking havoc all summer. First, there was the McDonald’s Happy Meal toy that was accused of cursing out young kids. And then earlier this month, a 40-foot-tall inflatable Minion terrorized the streets of Dublin, Ireland, causing traffic delays and minor car damage.
The jabbering little yellow creatures were spun off from the Despicable Me franchise into their own blockbuster film Minions this summer, which has taken in $915.5 million worldwide thus far. So they have no reason at all to get involved in a drug deal.
