Michael Keaton Takes Flight in New 'Birdman' Trailer

Don’t call it a comeback: Michael Keaton’s been here for years. But he hasn’t been a true lead since 2005’s forgettable horror flick White Noise. Since then, the two-time Batman has made plenty of supporting appearances, some applaudable (2010’s The Other Guys and Toy Story 3) some less so (this year’s Robocop and Need for Speed).

That all changes with this fall’s Birdman, which finds the actor – and this may sound familiar – playing a movie star who was once famous for playing a superhero, and is now struggling to stay relevant.

The quite exceptional trailer is now online, and it has basically everything we want in a preview: A slow-downed remix of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy”; a few Emma Stone sightings; and Edward Norton getting socked in the face.

The Oct. 17 release has serious awards potential, as it was directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, whose 21 Grams and Babel earned multiple Academy Award nominations and spurred Prozac sales nationwide. Maybe Keaton will finally get his Oscar due: Despite a decades-long career that includes everything from Night Shift to Beetlejuice to Jackie Brown, he’s never received a nomination — a fact that strikes us as absolutely batty.
